Dutchmen play second doubleheader in two days

By Mike Drooger –

It should be safe to say the Edgerton Flying Dutchmen volleyball team will be happy to see the last of Red Rock Central’s Karli Arkell. Don’t take it the wrong way. Miss Arkell might be the nicest person on the face of the earth. She might take in every lost dog or cat, make cookies for rest home residents, and sew socks for the sockless, but EHS still would likely bid her a fond farewell. For you see, Miss Arkell is 6’ 3”. She could be successful playing volleyball in a league where jumping is banned. She becomes super successful—if not downright unstoppable—when she jumps. She controlled the net on Saturday afternoon, November 14, at Edgerton when her Falcons took on Edgerton in another volleyball doubleheader. When she wasn’t smashing kills directly into the gym floor, she was blocking or intimidating the Edgerton hitters, and RRC cruised to six straight sets. Edgerton’s scores in the six sets were 7, 12, 15, 18, 11, and 15.

The bad news for Edgerton, as well as other opponents of the Falcons, is Arkell is just a junior. She’ll be around for two more basketball seasons and one more volleyball campaign. As a sophomore, Arkell collected 288 kills to go along with the 180 she had as a freshman. Through two and a half volleyball seasons, Arkell has 613 kills and 180 blocks in 192 sets.
