MARVIN DEGROOT

May 17, 1924 – November 4, 2021

Marvin DeGroot, 97, of Edgerton, Minn., formerly of Chandler, Minn., died on Thursday, November 4, 2021, at Edgebrook Care Center in Edgerton.

Services were held on Monday, November 8, 2021, at the Chandler Reformed Church in Chandler with Pastor Seth Atsma officiating. Pianist was Greg Vander Wal, Jason DeGroot shared memories about his grandfather, and pallbearers were: Jason DeGroot, Eric DeGroot, David Baumgartner, Greg Sliter, Clint Sliter and Joe Savig. Interment will be at the Chandler Memorial Cemetery.

Marvin DeGroot was born on May 17, 1924, to Teunis and Martha (Kallemeyn) DeGroot at the family home south of Chandler, Minn. As a small child Marvin had infant paralysis and later as a young adult, polio struck him, like it did so many others. He attended country school through the 8th grade. Then Marvin helped his dad on the farm.

On January 14, 1944, Marvin married Johanna “Jo” DeKruif at her parents’ farm near Chandler. They began their married life in Sioux Falls, S.D., where Marvin worked for John Morrell to earn enough money to start farming. In 1945 they started farming on a farm south of Chandler. In 1950 they purchased a farm north of Lake Wilson. When they retired from farming in 1980 they moved to an acreage north of Chandler. They enjoyed visiting and playing cards with friends and relatives. Marvin enjoyed woodworking, and helping others with their projects and home repairs.

Marvin and Jo were members of the Chandler Reformed Church. Marvin served on the consistory and as a Sunday School teacher. In February of 2018 Marvin and Jo moved to Edgebrook’s Assisted Living in Edgerton. Johanna passed away in August of 2020. In September of 2021, Marvin became a resident of Edgebrook where he died on November 4, 2021.

Marvin is survived by four children, Leslie (Sandy) DeGroot, Lake Wilson, Minn.; Arvin (Sandy) DeGroot, Sacred Heart, Minn.; Karla (William) Baumgartner, Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Charlene (Gary) Sliter, Princeton, Minn.; sixteen grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; and one brother, Lawrence (Johanna) DeGroot of Aurora, S.D.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Teunis and Martha DeGroot; his wife, Johanna; sisters, Margaret DeGroot; Alice (Wilbert) Sas; brother, Hemet (Jane) DeGroot; and one nephew, Teunis “Tony” DeGroot.
