Marie Veldhuizen was born to George and Elizabeth (Rodenburg) Vander Steen on March 13, 1927, on a farm southwest of Valley Springs, S.D. Marie lived her life knowing John 3:16, 17 – For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. She was raised on this farm and attended the country school that had a total of 8 students in grades 1-8. In 1943, the family moved to a farm southwest of Leota, Minn. In 1945, her father was struck with tuberculosis and Marie went to work to help support the family candling eggs at the hatchery in Edgerton.
Marie met Elmer at a young people’s event in Edgerton. They were married on February 12, 1948, at the Memorial Hall in Edgerton. They made their home on farms northwest of Edgerton where she was an active farmer alongside and supporting Elmer. They were lifelong members and committed servants in the American Reformed Church in Woodstock. Marie continued on the farm until May, 2019 when she moved to Edgebrook Estates Assisted Living.
