LLOYD VAN ESSEN

Memorial services for Lloyd Van Essen, 86, of Edgerton, Minn., were held Monday, June 28, 2021; 2:00 p.m. at the First Christian Reformed Church in Edgerton with Pastor Scott Muilenburg officiating. Interment was in Hillside Cemetery in Edgerton.
Music was provided by pianist Vicki Van Essen and the congregation sang It Is Well With My Soul, Because He Lives, and Hallelujah Chorus.
Casket bearers were Jeff Van Santen, Brian Fick, Mike Schoolmeester, Isaac Ossefoort, Travis Van Santen, Zack Kounkel, Bryan Schiebout, and Geoff Rowe.
Honorary casket bearers were Melissa Fick, Kristin Rowe, Karrie Johnson, Lisa Kounkel, and Pam Ossefoort.
Lloyd Vernon Van Essen was the youngest of 4 boys born to Ray and Grace (Vanden Bosch) Van Essen on March 19, 1935, in Pipestone County, Minn., where he was raised and attended the Edgerton Christian Elementary School in Edgerton.
On Feb. 18, 1955, Lloyd was united in marriage to Laura De Kam in Edgerton. Following their marriage they crop and dairy farmed west of Edgerton. In the fall of 1978, Lloyd and Laura moved off the farm and into Edgerton. Before fully retiring, he enjoyed driving truck at various jobs.
On June 24, 2021, Lloyd passed away at the Sioux Falls Sanford Hospital at the age of 86 years, 3 months, and 5 days.
Lloyd was a lifetime member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Edgerton. He enjoyed fishing and building toy barns and doll houses for the grandchildren. Many winters were spent in California and Texas. Laura passed away on April 14, 2007.
While attending a Christian singles group in Sheldon, Iowa, he met LaVonne Verbrugge. They were married on September 13, 2008, in Sheldon. They lived in Edgerton and enjoyed wintering in Apache Junction, Ariz. Many fond memories were made in Arizona, especially playing games and spending time with LaVonne’s daughter and son-in-law, Peg and Bob Jager.
He is survived by his wife, LaVonne of Edgerton; three daughters, Marilyn Van Santen of Luverne, Minn., LeAnne (Glen) Schoolmeester of Chandler, Minn., and Karla (Lyle) Schiebout of Trosky, Minn.; nine grandchildren, along with 17 great-grandchildren. Other survivors include two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Van Essen and Hermina Jouwstra; stepdaughter, Peg (Bob) Jager of Sheldon, their 3 children and 9 grandchildren; stepson, Steve (Angie) Smith of Sheldon.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Laura; son-in-law, Jim Van Santen; and 3 brothers, Wesley, Harold (Alice), and John.
