Irene Barnett

June 28, 1925 – January 19, 2018

Irene Agnes (Kortlever) Barnett was born June 28, 1925, in Murray County, Minn., to Frederick and Hattie Kortlever. She was the fourth of 11 children who lived on a large farm.

In 1948 Irene moved to California where she met and married Harry W. Skellenger in 1951 and had two children, Sharon and David.

In 1952 she committed her life to Jesus Christ. Her faith gave her strength and courage during the difficult times of her life. She used her talents and gifting to bless and encourage everyone around her.

In 1954, she married Floyd B. Barnett and two additional sons, Kenneth and Gerald, were born. The family relocated to a farm in Brownsmead, Ore., in 1967.

Irene is remembered as a compassionate, happy, outgoing person who would regularly relocate in order to provide care and support to family members and friends during their illnesses or difficult life transitions. Her care giving wasn’t a chore to her, and she lived a life of serving and invested her heart, skills, and time in her care for others. She was gifted in her care of infants, teenagers and the elderly.

Her professional accomplishment was retiring from Columbia Lighting in Spokane, Wash., after 14 1/2 years of service.

Irene enjoyed traveling. And she traveled to nearly every country in Europe, nine provinces in Canada, Mexico, Nepal, and Thailand as well as every state in the United States including many memorable fishing trips with her siblings. Friends and family recall her love of playing cards, especially pinochle. She was also an avid sports fan of Dodgers and Mariners baseball and Portland Trailblazer basketball. Irene was an accomplished artist who loved to draw and paint in oils.

Irene died January 19, 2018, of congestive heart failure. She is survived by a daughter, Sharon and Jonathan Crary, Albany, Ore., and sons David Barnett, Portland, Ore., Kenneth and Sonja Barnett, La Grange, Calif., and Gerald and Diane Barnett, Spokane Valley, Wash., grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and her remaining siblings: Frances Trayford, Ruth Smith, Lovina Daniels, Frederick, Leroy, Willis, and Russell Kortlever. Irene was preceded in death by three siblings: Helen Boll, Marjorie Smidt, and Gerald Kortlever.
